London from Southwark, before the Great Fire, c1666.

London from Southwark, before the Great Fire, c1666

"London" copper engraved print published in Amsterdam, about 1666 or earlier(?) This view is almost the same as ones by Pieter Hendrickcz Schut and Justus Danckerts published in 1666 to illustrate the Great Fire, with flames and smoke added above the city, which are not present on this print. Amongst several named landmarks are the old St Paul's as well as The Globe Theatre. There is a later very similar version of this print showing the new St Paul's and The Monument, with some differences to the figures in the foreground. The British Museum has several similar prints (but not the same) listed in the Crace Collection. FAULTS - trimmed to image edge, some loss at all corners, the worst being upper left, one repaired tear of 3 cm and three very small repaired tears, slight creasing. Even so a very rare print of pre-fire mid 17th century London. Size 27.5 x 21.5 cms. Ref H8927
